1918 was a seismic year in the history of British democracy, by any measure. Passed 100 years ago, the Representation of the People Act not only extended the vote to all men over the age of 21, but also granted women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications the right to vote for the first time. (It also institutionalised the first-past-the-post electoral system that remains in place today.) The change in law was the result of the impassioned, radical and at times militant struggle of numerous suffrage groups, and has shaped society ever since.

As part of Wonder Women 2018, members of Contact Young Theatre present She Bangs The Drums – a humorous and political piece of contemporary theatre which captures the voices, stories and testaments of some of the most important characters in this radical story. Whilst also raising questions around the shape and direction of Britain’s future political sphere.

Working under the directorship of Louise Mothersole and Rebecca Biscuit of the award winning Sh!T Theatre (whose latest project, DollyWould, was named as a standout performance at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe), audiences can expect a bold and exciting experience. She Bangs The Drums has been devised in collaboration with experts from the People’s History Museum, and with extensive research into the museum’s vast archives.

Supported by Museum of Science and Industry.
