The art of suffrage propaganda – talk by Elizabeth Crawford

An illustrated talk at the Working Class Movement Library alongside the suffrage centenary exhibition, discussing the wide range of artworks – banners, posters, postcards, china, jewellery etc –  produced by suffrage artists in support of the women’s suffrage campaign in the years before the First World War. The talk draws on research undertaken for Elizabeth's latest book, Art and suffrage: a biographical dictionary of suffrage artists.

Clare Debenham on Birth Control and the Rights of Women in the Early 20th Century

As part of the Spirited exhibition at the Portico library, Clare Debenham lectures on the first grassroots social movement after the suffragettes - the campaign for the right to birth control, and the hostility that greeted scientist and early feminist Marie Stropes and her contraception clinics.

What can we learn from IC Change?

IC Change is a volunteer-led campaign that called on the UK Government to ratify the Istanbul Convention (IC) which sets minimum standards for tacklin violence against women. They celebrated victory in December 2016 when 135 MPs voted in favour of ratification (although two voted against). We'll hear from its leaders and get an update on where the campaign is now.

In this centenary year, voices of the past, present and future collide as young women share creative reflections on the women’s suffrage movement in relation to contemporary female activism.  Join the WCML for tea and cake at 6pm, with the performance starting at 6.30pm.
